Becoming Independent

Friday Mar 20, 2009

Utility rates are on the rise, energy costs are sucking our economy dry, yet we continue to find ways to use more and more of the stuff we complain about every day. Did you know that electrical generation spews more green house gases than the transportation industry? It’s a common misconception that our biggest carbon contributor are the vehicles we drive every day, but in fact it’s the coal burning power plants that allow us to flip on the switch and have lights that are causing more of a problem. Did you also know that your home emits more carbon dioxide in one year than your vehicle. Our homes can be a major energy consumer, but you can change that, and 1st Light has the answer.

By switching to solar energy you can begin your journey to becoming an energy independent home. What do we mean by energy independent? Right now you are depending on the utility grid to provide electricity for your home. That electricity comes from dirty forms of energy generation like coal and natural gas burning power plants. If you install solar energy on your home you will be generating your own electricity during the day. All that electricity production is usually more than what your home demands so the extra energy is pushed out onto the grid. You are technically relieving the utility company from having to generate that energy so in turn helping reduce the amount of carbon emissions the power plants are spewing out. You can use that energy as credits on your account and your utility company will deduct that amount from the energy you consume during the evening. If sized correctly, your solar system will provide all the energy your home needs and will generate enough credits to provide all the energy you need in the evening. An energy independent home. It is possible, so what is stopping you? Why rent your energy when you can own it?
